Dental problems, like any other health ailment or medical condition, doesn’t come with any forewarning. There could be some early signs of a dental ailment but then you may not be able to understand the symptoms in the initial stages. Visiting a dentist is important for many reasons. One, you should always be proactive with your oral health and dental care. Prevention is better than cure and it is always better to be safe than sorry. Other than preventive dental care, you will have to visit a dentist should you have some problems or if you would want some restoration, correction or aesthetic enhancement. From getting veneers to getting some teeth extracted, there can be myriad reasons why you would have to see a dentist.

Ideally, you should visit a dental clinic at least twice a year. This applies to everyone in your family, including kids. If you have a history of dental ailments or have some pressing conditions then you should visit a dentist at least four times a year. Periodic assessment of your condition would be the key to successful long term curing of the problem.

Ideally, you should take your kids when they are four or five years old. Once the baby teeth have fallen and the permanent teeth have formed properly, kids should be taken to see a pediatric dentist. Not every child has the same dental health. From genetics to diet, anatomy to nutritional deficiencies, many factors influence dental health. Being proactive will help your kids to have stronger, healthier and properly shaped teeth.

Adults should have orthodontic screening if there is any anomaly. Misaligned teeth, protruding or recessed gums, crooked teeth or any type of structural problems in the mouth will call for an orthodontic screening. Kids should undergo such screening at the age of seven, no later than that. By that time, kids have properly formed molars and incisors. The teeth are usually set in their place and a dentist will be able to tell if they are normal or if there are some problems. An orthodontist shall also be able to point out if there would be some problems in the future. Orthodontic screening will help in diagnosing early or late loss of baby teeth, chances of crowding, cross bites, mouth breathing and biting the roof or cheek of the mouth and more.

Braces and the likes are ideal for kids. Adults too can get some help with braces but not to that extent. When it comes to cosmetic dentistry or solutions like veneers, patients must always opt for such solutions when one has permanent teeth that wouldn’t grow any further. Consult a dentist to know if a child has fully formed teeth. Adults, who don’t have any further chance of teeth loss and natural re-growth, would be ideal for all types of cosmetic treatments.

Yes. Many people feel that cosmetic dentistry pertains to improving the smile, how your teeth would look and the overall facial appearance. It is true that one primary objective of such treatments is to white the yellowish or stained teeth, to improve the alignment of crooked, bent or crowded teeth and to enhance one’s smile. But there is another primary objective. Such problems affect chewing, biting, breathing, smiling and does impair self esteem or confidence as well. Improperly aligned teeth can make one more vulnerable to injuries. So, cosmetic or orthodontic treatments are not always for the sole purpose of visual enhancement or aesthetic improvement. They are also to avert certain serious injuries and discomfort that you would be vulnerable to.

There are situations when you may have to consider removing a tooth or a few teeth. If a tooth or a few teeth are leading to crowding, if they are impairing the growth of other teeth, causing pain and gum problems, if they have lead to gaps between teeth and also on the gums, if they are causing bad bites and are not being of their primary use of supporting the facial structure and chewing and biting, then these teeth must be removed. You can always have such lost or removed teeth replaced.
